I wanted to make your students aware of a scholarship opportunity. Nursing Schools Almanac has just launched its second annual AspiringNurse Scholarship. Our website will award a $1,000 scholarship to an aspiring nurse who best demonstrates:

+ A track record of academic excellence, particularly in science and mathematics

This scholarship is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue college education in nursing, including LPN / LVN, ADN, and BSN programs. Scholarship applications will be accepted until midnight on June 30, 2016.

We ask interested students to visit www.nursingschoolsalmanac.com and click the banner on the right-hand side of the website's homepage. Here they'll find detailed scholarship information and the official application form.

If possible, we'd greatly appreciate that you include a link to our scholarship program on your school's scholarship webpage. Please also feel free to share information about this scholarship via social media.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. If you are not the appropriate person, please let me know whom I should contact instead with this scholarship information.

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” - Credited to Oscar Wilde

The Rule of Twelve
If people make “snap” judgments about you in the first 7 seconds, what are they saying about you?
Focus on the “Rule of Twelve” to make your first impression favorable.
  • The first twelve inches from the shoulders up – Smile, make eye contact
  • The first twelve steps a person takes – Project confidence, be alert (not focused on your notes or phone
  • The first twelve words a person states – Be friendly and sincere – make your greeting about THEM

OPPORTUNITIES / DATES

GetSet (Girls Exploring Technology, Science, Arts and Engineering Together)
is an extra-curricular program for high school females who are interested in STEAM. Members will explore STEAM subjects and careers through hands-on workshops, field trips and networking events. Interested students must attend the mandatory Parent and Student Orientation on September 24 at 6:00 pm at Foothill High School.

The Tri-Valley College and Career Fair
Put this on your calendar! It will be an assignment to attend! The College and Career Fair will be held on October 14 at Dublin High School from 6:30—8:00 pm. Families are invited to come and meet with representatives from UC’s, CSU’s, community colleges, private and out-of-state colleges, military recruiters, technical schools and apprenticeships. This is a free event!

UC DAVIS CONFERENCE
Open to ALL! Only $95 (includes meals, hotel and transportation from UC Berkeley!)   Registration deadline is October 4th! (but it usually sells out)
Over the past thirteen years, the Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Conference has grown from a local community-college event, attended by 231 students in 2003, to a national venue, hosting some 8,823 attendees at the University of California, Davis in 2014. The conference not only maintains its reputation for being the largest pre-medical and pre-health professions gathering at an undergraduate institution, but also stands as the only two-day event of its kind, supporting URM students (underrepresented in medicine, as defined by the AAMC), interested in a career in medicine.
The 2015 Event Poster is Now Available to View. It Summarizes the Event, Keynotes, Workshops, and More. Check it Out!
The unique character of the conference stems from the fact that it is entirely planned, staffed, coordinated, and funded by pre-medical and pre-health professions students keenly aware of the challenges facing their peers, who aspire to become health professionals.
The two-day event hosts an excellent selection of keynote speakers, Dean’s Panels, and 350 workshops covering a wide variety of health professional topics. Additional full day programs are run which focus on medicine, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, physician assistant, physical and occupational therapy, PhD graduate studies, optometry and public health.
Some key elements of the conference are the Pre-Health Professions Fair and the Dean’s Panels. During the fair, attendees are provided with an unparalleled opportunity to interact with school administrators from nearly all US medical schools and a wide variety of other Pre-Health Professional schools. During the course of an Admission’s Panel, Deans discuss their respective institutions – including admission requirements and qualities desired in prospective students – and take part in a moderated Q and A session. After this, attendees are given the opportunity to select from 350 workshops. Each session is an opportunity for attendees to explore the medical school/health professional school admissions process such as crafting one’s personal statement, your specific school curriculum, summer programs, financial aid, study skills, the MCAT, NET, PCAT, DAT, GRE, career options, time management, and others. Many of the workshops are led by Deans of Admissions from the country’s premier schools, leading experts, and faculty researchers.
